The Boulder County Clerk and Recorder's Office is currently seeking a Technology Specialist to join our team. This hands-on role supports the needs of the Elections division by providing technical support for election operations, including configuring systems, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, and ensuring compliance with security protocols. The Technology Specialist will prepare and support election hardware and software, with an emphasis on Vote Center setup. Duties include deploying equipment and supplies to offsite locations and tracking and maintaining inventory of all Elections division technology assets to ensure accuracy, readiness, and proper lifecycle tracking.

Additionally, this position completes hardware and software troubleshooting for all Clerk and Recorder divisions as needed and completes planned updates, upgrades, and installations. The county IT department will be a common resource for this role, when troubleshooting escalations or larger scale rollouts are required.

About the position
This position provides direct technical support to Clerk and Recorder staff by performing hands-on tier 1 troubleshooting, software and hardware configuration, and end-user support. The role is focused on, but not limited to, ensuring systems function effectively to support election operations. Adherence to security protocols and legal compliance standards is required. We seek someone who is motivated to contribute to a seamless voting experience for the public.

The ideal candidate is eager to learn, self-motivated and able to apply new skills. They should be comfortable working with Windows-based systems, including installing and configuring operating systems, performing updates, and verifying hardware functionality. Responsibilities include managing and maintaining accurate hardware inventory across multiple locations, troubleshooting end-user issues, and learning and supporting office-specific applications. Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite is required, and familiarity with tools like SharePoint and endpoint or inventory management systems is helpful.

Strong communication skills are essential, particularly the ability to work patiently with users with limited technical experience and communicate technical information to non-technical audiences. 
Candidates should be comfortable following established procedures and documenting completed work and procedures accurately. This role will also involve providing procedural training and guidance to temporary technical staff during election periods as needed, while continuing to perform hands-on technical tasks as the primary responsibility. The ability to remain positive and flexible under pressure is key to success in this role.

This position will work Monday - Thursday from 7:00am - 5:30pm (10-hour day). This position will require overtime, nights and weekends during election season and is subject to periods of time when vacation scheduling is not allowed (because of the election calendar). This is a hybrid position. There are times where on-site work will be required, in 1750 33rd St., Boulder, CO, and more frequently during election season. Under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines, this position is exempt.  

Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.


Hiring Salary Range: $70,428.00 - $85,908.00 Annually


Tentative Hiring Timeline:

  • Phone Screening: March 9th
  • First Round Interviews: March 16th
  • Second Round Interviews:  March 23rd
  • Reference Check: March 25th


New employees receive an 80-hour bank of vacation at the time of hire, in addition to 8 hours of both vacation and medical leave accruals each month (Must not have been employed at Boulder County during the 12 months prior to re-hire date to qualify). Examples of Duties

  1. Set up, maintain, and support hardware, software, and network components.
  2. Schedule and execute technical setup for Vote Centers.
  3. Collaborate and coordinate with team members on technology and Vote Center setup needs.
  4. Ensure certain voting system components are updated, maintained, tested, and secure.
  5. Create and maintain clear procedural documentation.
  6. Support lifecycle management of technology assets within the Elections division.
  7. Support the implementation of and maintain an inventory system.
  8. Ensure compliance with Colorado statute and rule as well as Clerk and Recorder policies.
  9. Provide procedural training and guidance to temporary technical staff during election periods.
  10. Communicate technical information to audiences with varying technical backgrounds.
  11. Provide technical recommendations for certain technology purchases.
  12. Act as a backup for peers, learning essential technology and procedures in other areas to support critical functions.
  13. Support and collaborate on special projects outside of the elections cycle, improving processes and systems within the scope of elections.
  14. Perform additional related work as required.
  15. May be reassigned during emergency situations.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. Any combination of relevant education and experience is encouraged. In this position, we are looking for a minimum of 

  • At least six years of combined education and professional experience in a technology-related capacity as it applies to this position.

Required experience includes applying fundamental concepts, practices and procedures related to planning, setup, testing, and troubleshooting of a variety of hardware, software, and network components. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite or similar is also required.

Any equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
