Job Description Summary

Performs a variety of complex duties and supervisory work requiring confidentiality and extensive use of independent judgment and knowledge of technical terms. The Elections Specialist maintains accurate voter registration records, provides technical and customer support, and ensures compliance with election laws. This role supports mail ballot processing, assists the public, and contributes to the success of elections through data management and collaboration with internal and external partners. It requires strong attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to adapt during high-volume election cycles. Works under general supervision from the Clerk & Recorder, Chief Deputy and Deputy of Elections.

Job Description

Voter Registration & Customer Service - 40%

  • Maintain a clean, accurate voter registration database.
  • Assist with all mapping functions necessary for creation/maintenance of taxing districts, municipalities, and towns.
  • Ensure voter registration data is available to public/political entities.
  • Answer questions and respond to any voter call regarding non-received or incorrect ballots.
  • Assist the public in person, by phone, electronically, and in writing regarding voting information.
  • Process paper and electronic voter registration forms, voter letters, and voter confirmation cards.
  • Public contact in the office area; further the voter education process.


Technical & Data Management - 30%

  • Provide local tech support for the statewide voter registration database application (SCORE).
  • Enter data into multiple computer programs; ability to apply new computer skills regularly.
  • Use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
  • Create, update, and maintain in-house software solutions.
  • Assist in redesigning processes/forms due to legislative changes.
  • Provide input on new projects, equipment evaluation, production, and quality.
  • Review and explain district participation, ballot design, and voting system statutes.


Election Support & Processing - 20%

  • Oversee the receipt, date stamping, and processing of mail ballots and related correspondence.
  • Manage and train temporary election staff.
  • Serve as a representative of the designated election official when required.
  • Act as backup for peers, supporting election-critical functions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Admin & Compliance - 10%

  • Compose and type correspondence, reports, etc.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Clerk & Recorder’s Office and external partners.
  • Have a working knowledge of Colorado Revised Statutes, Title 1, and relevant election laws.
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment.
  • Assist with tasks related to other Weld County Departments.

Required Qualifications

Required Education

  • High School Diploma/GED


Experience Qualifications

  • 2 years experience in an increasingly responsible position in an office setting.


Preferred Experience

  • Computer data entry, basic ten key, public contact experience strongly preferred.


Skills and Abilities

  • Will be required to work in any department of the Clerk and Recorder, and to work flexible hours, to include evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Considerable knowledge of office practices and procedures; working knowledge of elections as required by the position; skills in operation of office equipment, including personal computer, SCORE system, calculator, ballot marking devices, etc.
  • Ability to learn technical terminology; to compose letters and materials using some exercise of independent judgment; to follow verbal and written instructions; to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, agencies and the public.
  • Candidate must pass criminal background check prior to employment start date.


Licenses and Certifications

  • Job offer is contingent upon passing a background investigation. Upon Hire Required
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License and adequate Liability Insurance and be willing to travel throughout Weld County. Upon Hire Required
  • Possession of or ability to obtain, in the next two years, a Colorado State Election Certification.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, voter’s registration in the State of Colorado.
  • Maintain continuing education hours annually or as required.
  • Pre-employment substance screening is required for this position.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening. Employment is contingent upon successfully passing the screening in accordance with Weld County policy.


This position is non-exempt from the minimum wage and overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore eligible for overtime pay.
