Job Description

Are you a strategist who’s also mastered the complex details of workers’ compensation insurance and regulations? That’s the combination of skills SAIF is looking for in its new underwriting policy adviser. 

The underwriting policy adviser will lead the strategic development of underwriting policies and guidelines and serve as a technical resource for complex underwriting and regulatory interpretation to ensure compliance. 

In this roleyou’ll help set and interpret the rules for how SAIF underwrites and prices workers’ comp, making sure decisions are consistent and meet regulatory requirements.  

You’ll evaluate underwriting selection and pricing performance, lead advanced data analysis and predictive modeling to inform enterprise pricing strategy, and develop and implement complex pricing and rating plans.  

While data is a large part of the job, excellent people skills are also You’ll represent the department on committees and advisory boards, partner with regional and other teams, and act as a liaison with IT to improve systems and workflowsYou’ll also provide training, leadership, and mentoring to policy team members. 

  

To succeed in this important roleyou’ll need seven years increasingly responsible experience in Oregon workers’ compensation underwriting or a combination of underwriting and data analysis/reporting experience.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical resource for underwriting policy interpretation, providing guidance on complex underwriting, regulatory, workflow, and systems issues to ensure compliance with laws, rules, and program goals. Provide consultation and recommendations related to underwriting authority for selection and pricing decisions.

  • Participate in the development of systems to monitor and measure underwriting performance.

  • Evaluate corporate pricing and selection performance against policies procedures and collaborate with underwriting and regional staff to communicate and implement changes.

  • Lead advanced data analysis, predictive modeling, and data mining to develop insights and recommendations that inform SAIF’s enterprise pricing strategy, pricing structures, and long-term financial sustainability.

  • Provide leadership and subject-matter expertise in underwriting principles, policies, and procedures, including maintaining current knowledge of emerging exposures. Recommend selection, coverage and pricing authorities for underwriters.

  • Develop and implement complex insurance pricing and rating plans supporting accurate system configuration and operational readiness.

  • Apply enterprise pricing frameworks through ongoing analysis of underwriting performance, policy applications, and operational outcomes; develop reporting and recommendations to support PAUSD strategic planning, performance monitoring, and continuous improvement.

  • Represent the underwriting department on advisory boards and committees, providing technical expertise and operational perspective related to pricing, software systems, retrospective rating plan pricing and performance, dividends, rate filing, etc.

  • Develop and maintain underwriting reports and data-driven tools that provide accurate and actionable data to support decision making in the underwriting department. Deliver and/or arrange for data analysis related training of department staff.

  • Serve as a liaison between underwriting and Information Technology (IT) to support production and policy issues while identifying opportunities to improve or change work processes to enhance workflow efficiency.

  • Oversee the accuracy and quality of the division internet and intranet pages.

  • Provide overall direction for SAIF classification and rating activities. Represent SAIF on the Oregon Classification & Rating Committee to promote the simplification and improvement of the classification and rating system used in Oregon and ensure that the classification system is consistently and equitably applied to Oregon employers.

The following qualifications are recommended:

  • Seven years of increasingly responsible Oregon workers’ compensation underwriting experience or a combination of underwriting and data analysis/reporting experience.

  • Recommended experience includes working with varying levels of complexity from template underwriting to complex payment and rating options, and training and developing others.

  • Data analysis/reporting experience including skills in Excel, SQL, PowerBI, and/or SAS. Experience working with agents in a dual distribution or agency-based company is preferred.

  • A bachelor’s degree in business management, insurance, or related field.

  • A Certified Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) or comparable professional insurance designation is preferred.

  • Other combinations of skills and experience may be considered.

Compensation & Benefits

Typical hiring range:‏‏‎ ‎$102,038‏‏‎ ‎-‏‏‎ ‎$120,045.‏‏‎ ‎The pay range for this position is annually based on a full-time schedule. Actual compensation will be determined using factors such as experience, skills, training, certifications & education.
