The American Diabetes Association (ADA) seeks an individual for the position of senior director of federal government affairs. This position is responsible for implementing the ADA’s federal government affairs legislative priorities including designing and implementing advocacy strategies; acting as the ADA’s lobbyist on Capitol Hill; representing ADA at coalition and partner meetings; and managing volunteer leadership groups as needed. This position works under the supervision of the senior vice president of federal government affairs and may include supervision of others in the division. The position requires the ability to collaborate with colleagues in the government affairs & advocacy division as well as with external partners to achieve the ADA’s advocacy goals. Candidates for this position must be able to work independently and manage multiple priority projects. This is a remote working position however the candidate must be able to commute regularly to the District of Columbia for meetings on Capitol Hill (with a preference for candidates living in Washington, DC/Virginia/Maryland).
The successful incumbent will:
- Lead federal government affairs efforts for ADA, scheduling meetings, participating in goal and budget setting, tracking key performance indicators, etc.
- Participate in division leadership meetings working in collaboration with other departments and divisions as required.
- Act as ADA’s main lobbyist on Capitol Hill.
- Assist with national advocacy committees and coalitions as needed.
- Utilize the ADA’s grassroots and communications capabilities to support federal campaigns as required.
- Represent ADA in speaking engagements, both internal and external.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree, with 10 plus years’ experience in federal government affairs.
- Demonstration of active participation in public policy making as a lobbyist, legislative or regulatory staff person.
- A strong personal commitment to preventing and curing diabetes and improving the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
